Ford Open Day

Go behind the scenes at Ford Materials Recycling Facility (MRF)

Posted on 16 August 2013

Following on from the success of last year’s Heritage Open Days event, recycling and waste management firm Viridor is pleased to announce that they are once again throwing open their doors to residents of West Sussex.

Heritage Open Days, organised by English Heritage, celebrate England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties not usually open to the public or those that would usually attract an entrance fee. It is England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event and provides a unique opportunity to explore some of the hidden gems in English cities, towns and villages.

On Thursday 12th September (at 6.30pm) and Friday 13th September (at 10am and 12pm), Viridor will be offering tours free of charge to residents in West Sussex at the state of the art Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), operated on behalf of West Sussex County Council. Tours at the MRF, as seen on BBC’s Bang Goes the Theory, will allow residents to learn more about what happens to their recycling once it is collected from their home.

Tanya Reed, Regional Communications Manager said: “This is a unique opportunity for anyone curious about what happens to their recycling once it’s collected to get a rare glimpse behind the scenes at one of our busiest sites. We don’t just trash the trash but separate out all the materials we receive so they can be recycled into other products.

“We know that people are increasingly interested in reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill and hope that by coming and seeing what happens at our site they will go away inspired to recycle more and waste less.”

Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents Services, said: “I have visited the Materials Recycling Facility and it is a fascinating place that shows how materials are being recycled. People are recycling more but I would ask people to remember to ensure they recycle all materials, clean, dry and loose.”

The tour will last one hour. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment by calling 01903 712 620 or emailing All spaces must be pre-booked.
