WEEE are coming to Selsey

Posted on 22 July 2013

If you are having a Summer blitz on your house, and find electric gadgets you no longer want or are broken, don’t bin them bring them!

All types of electrical appliances can be recycled, so if you are clearing out those unwanted appliances, bring them along to the latest mobile Waste Electrical and Electronic Recycling Event in Selsey.

West Sussex County Council will hold its fourth Mobile Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) event of the year on Friday, July 26, at Selsey’s East Beach car park between 8am and 3pm.

During the previous event in May, the equivalent weight of four family cars of electrical waste was collected, amounting to 5.36 tonnes. Since the events began, the equivalent of 42 family cars of electrical waste – 54 tonnes – has been collected.

Last year more than 37 tonnes of WEEE was collected including more than 900 TVs and monitors.

The events are being run by West Sussex County Council in partnership with Viridor, the site operator, and Chichester District Council.

Lionel Barnard, Cabinet Member responsible for Residents’ Services, said: “Many people in West Sussex understand that valuable materials can be recovered when they recycle unwanted equipment. We can see this from the good recycling rates in West Sussex.  When it comes to WEEE, we would encourage residents to think twice before putting WEEE into their waste bins and to consider if they can reuse it and if not, to take it to be recycled.”

Among WEEE items that may be accepted are large white goods, fridges and freezers, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, household batteries in addition to display equipment such as televisions or laptops and small electrical appliances.

For any items that can’t be accepted, the nearest household waste recycling site is at:

Chichester Household Waste Recycling Site at Coach Road, Westhampnett, PO18 0NS.

Alternatively contact Chichester District Council, which offers a chargeable bulky household collection service. For more details phone 01243 785166 or visit http://www.chichester.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=4177 for details of costs.

The next WEEE event in Selsey will be on Friday 27th September.
