Recycle for West Sussex Shortlisted for another Partnership Award

Posted on 8 May 2012

Following on from the recent success in the Association for Organics Recycling Awards, Viridor and West Sussex County Council are pleased to announce that they have been shortlisted for another award; The Best Operational Project at the Partnership Awards 2012, organised by Partnerships Bulletin.

West Sussex County Council signed a 25 year recycling and waste management contract with Viridor in March 2004. Under the contract, Viridor has delivered a £25 million investment in state-of-the-art recycling facilities across the county, including a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at Ford near Arundel and the redevelopment of several Household Waste Recycling Sites.

The contract has led to a three-fold increase in kerbside dry recycling from 24,500 tonnes in 2004 to 82,000 tonnes in 2011, in addition to a 35% increase in waste composted. The contract goal is to achieve a 45% recycling rate by 2015, which is expected to be reached well in advance of the target date (the rate was 44.6% at end 2011).

At the Partnership Awards, Recycle for West Sussex will face stiff competition from projects in various industries, across the UK and internationally, including the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service PFI, the Big Wood School in Nottingham and the Victorian County Court Facility in Australia. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on 31st May.

Lionel Barnard, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy, Environment and Enterprise at West Sussex County Council, commented: “Both ourselves and Viridor understand that waste management is changing and that waste should be looked at in a whole new way. Through the Recycle for West Sussex contract, waste is being transformed from something that was once ‘thrown away’ to something that unleashes new possibilities and can reduce the need for precious natural resources. Being recognised by national award schemes is a great compliment for what we are already doing.”

Colin Richardson, Viridor’s regional manager added; “To be shortlisted for this award just two weeks after being announced winner of the Best Partnership Award at the AfOR Awards is great praise for the work that both partners are doing to ensure that the Recycle for West Sussex contract is one of the most forward thinking recycling contracts in this country.”
