Cardboard 2

Rip it up and start again

Posted on 3 July 2019

Speaking of recycling, something we are asked all the time is what to do with large items of cardboard. We would always say please don’t leave cardboard by the side of your recycling bin as a summer shower or thunderstorm can quickly ruin the cardboard by making it wet and unrecyclable.

We would recommend tearing large cardboard into smaller pieces – the size of a cereal packet is ideal – and placing it in your recycling bin. Or you can take cardboard to your local Household Waste Recycling Site.

It’s so important to make sure all your recycling is clean, dry and loose. Items that are covered with leftover food or drink cannot be recycled.

So please remember, items should be:

  • CLEAN - free from food and drink leftovers - a quick rinse will do.
  • DRY - keep your recycling bin lid shut – soggy paper and cardboard can’t be recycled and can clog up machinery when sorted.
  • LOOSE – not tied up in plastic bags.
