Popular Selsey WEEE mobile recycling events will continue, decides West Sussex County Council

Posted on 9 January 2013

A trial West Sussex County Council project to collect broken or unwanted electrical items has proven so successful that further funding has been secured to continue it for another year.

Mobile Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) events will continue to be carried out at Selsey’s East Beach Car Park every two months, starting on Friday, January 25 between 8am and 3pm.

The first trial began in November 2011, following the County Council and its partners being successful in gaining funding to take electrical recycling mobile and help achieve government aims to increase WEEE recycling.

A total of 33 tonnes of electrical waste was collected during the year’s trial, at an average of 5.5 tonnes per event. This included more than 900 TVs and monitors.

Among items collected were hairdryers, microwave ovens, old televisions and even a mini jukebox.

The trial is being run by West Sussex County Council in partnership with Viridor, which operates the site, Chichester District Council and (PCS) Electrolink in order to further encourage recycling of small WEEE items and to provide a more localised service in rural communities.

The work between West Sussex County Council and Viridor has been recognised nationally by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Funding has come from the manufacturers and retailers of electrical and electronic waste, who are required to fund the recycling of WEEE at their end of life.

County Council Deputy Leader Lionel Barnard, Cabinet Member responsible for waste, said: “I am really pleased at how well this collection event has progressed and at the support people have given to the Selsey service.

“Not only has WEEE been diverted from landfill, but the trial brought out WEEE that would probably still be stuck in the cupboard.

“We are confident the residents of Selsey will help us maintain our UK pacesetter status in recycling WEEE items by continuing to take advantage of the service.

“Therefore we are very pleased to have secured funding for another year to continue these events.”

The events will accept a wider range of WEEE next year, including large white goods, fridges and freezers, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, household batteries in addition to display equipment such as televisions or laptops and small electrical appliances.
