Summer safety: Evacuation at Horsham MBT

Posted on 2 August 2018

Last week there was an incident at our Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility, north of Horsham.

A large numbers of flares were disposed of in the general waste and ended up going through the machinery. They ignited and caused a full evacuation of the plant.

If you have out-of-date or damaged flares, first contact the place where you originally bought the flares as they may operate a 'take back' scheme. If not, contact your local Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC), who will advise you on how the flares can be disposed of safely.

There is further guidance available on the safe disposal of flares on our website, but please remember that if you put these items in the bin you are ultimately risking the lives of anyone that comes into contact with them afterwards.
