Help win the war on food waste

Posted on 22 June 2018

We’re all guilty of buying too much food and letting it fester in the fridge or cupboard; we know this because over 30% of West Sussex's general waste consists of food items.

Some of the usual suspects include apples, potatoes and bread (to name a few) but what can we do to try and avoid throwing more food (and money) in the bin.

Here are some of our top tips to help you out:

1. Make a meal plan – This way you know what you need to buy and when you’re going to cook it.

2. Plan your portions – By knowing how to portion up your dinners correctly you can not only save money but also stop food from going in the bin.

3. Find recipes to get the most out of your leftovers - If you do have leftovers, there are recipe finders online which will let you type in an ingredient and search for recipes. Try Supercook and BBC Good Food

4. Love your freezer – Did you know that you can put sliced bread in the freezer? It holds up really well and can be taken straight out and toasted for an easy breakfast. Potatoes can also be mashed if they’re nearing their best before and then frozen. Lots of food can go in the freezer and be used at a later date so why not give it a try.

5. Feed your compost – If all else fails, there is always the compost bin. Check out our A-Z of what can go in there.
