West Sussex Shortlisted for Partnership Award

Posted on 10 February 2012

West Sussex’s joint recycling and composting service has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award. The kerbside collection, recycling and composting service, which operates in partnership between West Sussex County Council, Horsham District Council, Viridor the County’s recycling contractor and the composter Olus, is one of three in the running for the local partnership award at the AfOR (Association for Organics Recycling) annual award ceremony.

The award is designed to highlight efficient and effective collection and processing services that are delivered in partnership between a local authority and a resource management company.

Over the past 12 months, the Acorn kerbside collection scheme in Horsham District has diverted about 900 tonnes of paper and card to the Ford Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) saving £25,000 a year. This means a better quality green waste for composting, which is then sold at Household Waste Recycling Centres to local residents. This has been made possible through the introduction of a collection service that has allowed paper and card to be diverted from the kerbside collected green waste service to more environmentally beneficial recycling. The combined infrastructure, provided through the West Sussex Recycling and Waste Handling partnership, has also delivered further efficiencies; from the kerbside collections, to transfer station networks and then to either the Ford MRF or the Olus compost site.
